It is a scaled-up version of the scrum framework that allows this agile set of rules to be used by larger organisations of hundreds or thousands of people. The traditional roles are still present, but at higher levels new roles are now available, derived from the SAFe SM, PO and Team roles.

In a Scaled Agile environment, similar to basic scrum, the Scrum Master helps with iteration planning, daily stand-up, review and restrospection. In the case of SAFe, however, he/she must be able to fit into a larger system, must be able to absorb the rules of scrum well, the goals of RTE, and the process of ART.

In the scaled up agile framework, the Product Owner is one step removed from the business owner. The operation of an ART is captured by Product Management and from the inputs from here, he/she creates and maintains the Team Backlog. The rules of scrum are essential here too, but it is important that the SAFe Product Owner also understands the collaboration between the teams.
