ITIL® version 3 has supported the design, management and improvement of IT service management processes for nearly a decade. The business and IT world has changed dramatically in recent years and is still changing. With the emergence and proliferation of cloud-based solutions, new and different strategies, planning and management processes are required to deal with faster changes.

ITIL® 4 extends the capabilities of previous versions, providing a practical and flexible foundation for organisations to support digital transformation. It provides a complete, end-to-end IT/digital operating model for the delivery and operation of technology-enabled products and services, and enables IT teams to play a key role in broader business strategy. The Agile approach, already familiar and successful in other areas, and the DevOps principles supporting the linking of operations-development-business, have also been integrated organically into the new ITIL® 4 framework.

The new ITIL® 4 has been developed with the knowledge and suggestions of hundreds of industry experts from around the world and more than 2,000 ITIL® development team members. With the release of ITIL® 4, new courses will be available and the associated exams and certification system have been redesigned.
